Fun Fun Fun Fest Springs a Lineup Leak

By Chase Hoffberger, June 19, 2013, 7:48pm, Earache!

Rap dudes and riot grrls rejoice. There’s a leak in the Fun Fun Fun Fest lineup holding cell, and five names are now out.

Legendary Los Angeles rap OG Ice-T joins British DJ Bonobo, straight edge icons Judge, indie rockers the Walkmen, and Bikini Kill breakout crew the Julie Ruin on the first leak of this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest lineup. Festival owner Graham Williams noted last night that the festival will continue leaking acts on a weekly basis until the full lineup gets revealed in July.

These five acts points to the November festival’s unfettered intention to keep bookings diverse and off-kilter. Case in point: the inclusion of Ice-T, a pioneer of gangsta rap who’s spent more time in television studios than rap cyphers this millenium.

As for the rest of the five, Bonobo represents one this town has rarely seen. Same holds for Judge, who broke up in 1991 before reuniting this spring to play a series of shows in their native New York.

The Walkmen come through town all the time. I caught their Friday afternoon set at Club DeVille during South by Southwest this year and can affirm that seven albums have done nothing to wash the sheen of their shows.

As for the Julie Ruin: they’re more or less a new front for longtime riot grrl Kathleen Hanna, who split with her influential Bikini Kill in 1997 before running a stint with Le Tigre.

More leaks are expected to pop up within the next few weeks. We offered our take on a few acts Transmission’s hopefully looking into in Playback last week. For now, scope TE’s preview video, and get excited. Another round of tickets go on sale at 10am Thursday morning. Fun Fun Fun Fest is now only five months away.
