Wednesday Rewind

By Austin Powell, September 7, 2011, 5:43pm, Earache!

“Bastrop and its surrounding piney woods has inspired the last few years of our songwriting and the releases that have followed,” wrote Centro-matic's Will Johnson on the still-raging wildfire that destroyed his former neighbor's property. “Every ounce of Candidate Waltz was written out there."

"The Little Raider EP that I released earlier in the year is as close as I could get to out and out writing a love note to that area’s beauty, inhabitants, and uniqueness.”

That note from Austin's Monster of Folk, which detailed two fundraisers for Bastrop fire relief funds, brought our attention to Centro-matic's latest video, "Iso-Residue," a charming tour diary filmed by drummer Matt Pence and edited to the song's jagged beat.

White Dress "No Solid State"
The latest from White Dress caught our attention in a different manner, one that's not entirely safe for work. The b/w drone-pop gem alternates between stark, solo headshots of singer Arum Rae and seductive, shadow movements.

Suzanna Choffel "Deep Girl"
Back in late 2008, the Chronicle championed Suzanna Choffel as “The Next Fun Fearless Female Rock Star.” (There was more but we couldn't say it three times fast with screwing up.) The Coveter made good on the claim with her latest, Steady Eye Shaky Bow, spotlighted here with “Deep Girl.”

The Sour Notes "Last Looks"
More recently, the Sour Notes visited the Palm Door for Paper Cuts, delivering a surprisingly heavy set of Wall of Sound-worthy indie pop. Here's the title track to the band's new album, Last Looks, the noisy suite that closed the evening.
