Fresh off a nomination for the Austin Music Hall of Fame, Okkervil River appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Monday to premiere the new single, “Wake and Be Fine,” a full four months before the group's new album, I Am Very Far, arrives in stores.
Okkervil River “Wake and Be Fine”
The studio version will be hard pressed to surpass this rendition, which features Questlove and the New Pornographers’ A.C. Newman. Here's what Sheff had to say about the new album in the press release that followed the performance.
"The goal was to push my brain to places it didn't want to go. The idea was to not have any idea – to keep myself confused about what I was doing. I produced it myself so that I could extend the songwriting process all the way through to the very last second of recording, so the songs would never really stop changing."
Grand Champeen “Just Want to Get You Alone”
Grand Champeen's one of the best bar-bands Austin's ever produced, but the local quartet cleans up nicely too. Let's hope this clip from their ACL Presents: Satellite Sets paves the way for the long-awaited follow-up to 2007's Dial T Fro This. Watch the full set here, along with new episodes from Monahans and Brownout.
Centro-matic “Only in My Double Mind”
It's no secret that Will Johnson is quite the painter, especially when it comes to acrylic folk art. In this incredible video for Centro-matic's “Only in My Double Mind,” the singer/guitarist takes matters to another level, composing the cover art to the Spring album, Candidate Waltz . For a limited time, you can also stream Johnson's entire set with Monsters of Folk on Austin City Limits. Fast forward to the 25-minute mark. That's when Johnson steals the show with “Just to Know What You've Been Dreamin',” beautifully assisted by My Morning Jacket's Jim James.
Sahara Smith “Are You Lonely”
Wimberley songbird continues her ascent with this lovely, locally shot video for “Are You Lonely,” the second single from her acclaimed Myth of the Heart.
