Update: Hope for Haiti

The horrific 7.0 earthquake that ripped apart Haiti near Port-au-Prince on Tuesday has sparked a global outpouring both profound and personal. The tragedy hit particularly close to home for Aaron Ivey. The local musician has been trying to formally adopt a four-year-old boy from the neighboring city of Cazale for more than two years.

It takes a person of strong faith and devotion to channel something higher through the rubble of Haiti. A pastor at Austin Stone Community church, Ivey attempts to do just that on his fittingly titled latest, Between the Beauty and Chaos, released in June. Tonight at the Parish he culls a few of those worship ballads as part of a benefit bill – rounded out by Matt McCloskey, Miranda Dodson, and Kevin McKinney – being presented by the new local nonprofit Music for the City. All proceeds Real Hope for Haiti, a medical clinic for malnourished children.

Elsewhere, Antone’s hosts a medical supply drive for Haiti on Tuesday, 11am-midnight. The nightclub is collecting elastic bandages, splints, slings, and pretty much anything else that could be of some use. Joe Ely is corralling some Flatlanders and friends for the Help Us Help Haiti show at the Austin Music Hall on Sunday, Jan. 24. The show, which will include a silent auction, has now confirmed Asleep at the Wheel, the Gourds, Guy Forsyth, Bruce Robison, Jack Ingram, Kelly Willis, Kinky Friedman, Paula Nelson, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Reckless Kelly, Robert Earl Keen, and Shawn Colvin.

The following Tuesday night, Vino Vino is donating 50 percent of its retail sales to Partners in Health, as part of a benefit that features local jazz starlet Kat Edmonson and friends. Do your part.
