Jazz Hands

By Audra Schroeder, April 20, 2009, 3:20pm, Earache!

Thursday at Boyd Vance Theatre, the Church of the Friendly Ghost adds to April's already amazing Jazz Appreciation Month with pianist Burton Greene and clarinetist Perry Robinson. Greene came out of the Chicago school of bebop and jazz in the 1950s before heading to NYC, falling into the verdant free jazz scene of the 1960s, and becoming a founding member of the Free Form Improvisation Ensemble. He also notably played on Charlie Haden's 1969 Liberation Music Orchestra. Ubiquitous clarinetist Robinson comes from the same generation, and has honed his craft with everyone from Dave Brubeck to Henry Grimes.

As part of this weekend's Fusebox Festival, Greene and Robinson also participate in an interview at the Modern Aural Sculpture Symposium South, Friday and Saturday at the Acton School of Business, 1404 East Riverside.

Epistrophy Arts closes out the month, hosting sax man Peter Brötzmann with Eric Revis and Nasheed Waits next Thursday, Apr. 30.
