Open Windows starts simply. Blogger-nobody Nick Chambers (Elijah Wood) won a contest and is set to meet actress Jill Goddard (Sasha Grey) at Austin’s Fantastic Fest. But that plot point quickly becomes old news, and from there the film never lets up. The ride is bumpy but mesmerizing.

The multi-instrumentalist jazz musician Rahsaan Roland Kirk is the subject of this documentary, which gets its title from one of Kirk’s albums. Often considered to be a novelty act by those who don’t know better, this film seeks to burnish the jazzman’s legacy.

Kirin J Callinan set us up with his appearance: hockey mullet, rodent mustache, bedroom tattoos, pawnshop gold chains, hiked-up army pants, and a sneaky look in his eyes. Then he whips out a song like “Landslide” and absolutely crushes our soul.
