Z'Tejas Shutters West Sixth Flagship, Moves South

By A. Richmond, March 21, 2023, 1:45pm, On the Range

Anyone considering themselves part of Austin’s old-school restaurant, nightlife, or Clarksville scenes likely let out an “Aw!” at the news that Z’Tejas will close its West 6th Street location on April 1. What sound came out at the news that Z’Tejas will open a spot in Kyle, just 22 miles south of that refurbished Victorian home on 1110 W. Sixth?

As Austin continues to expand, we can only watch as old-school outposts leave the city center and move not that far away, in Texas miles. Via a press release, Z’Tejas confirmed that their last supper, Austin-style, mural featuring icons like Willie, Leslie, and Ann [Richards] will relocate to another, equally photogenic spot. And get ready for more change. As reported by Austin Towers, real estate developers Riverside Resources presented the Architectural Review Committee of the city’s Historic Landmark Commission with plans to convert the West Sixth Street building into something mixed-use-y. Expect height, perhaps a boutique hotel, office space, residences, retail, and underground parking. Z'Tejas’ new location in Kyle is slated for 18920 I-35 Frontage Road, and will be two freestanding buildings.

To make the last days a little more special for regulars, Z’Tejas launched a new menu on March 20 with original items like Ruby Red Trout and Navajo Tacos, presumably developed by the talented chefs who worked there back in 1989, like Jack Gilmore and Leo Madrigal.

Z’Tejas will celebrate its final days on Sixth Street with $5 margaritas all day and a DJ set from 6-10pm on Friday, March 24.

Z’Tejas’ location in Avery Ranch will continue to sling fajitas and that perfect chopped salad until their new spot in Kyle is operational, hopefully by summer 2023.
