Weekend Wine: Sicilian White Wine

By Wes Marshall, July 27, 2019, 7:16am, On the Range

Sicily is not quite as hot as Texas right now, but it’s close. The Tasca family has made wine in Sicily for eight generations and have developed quite a reputation for producing delicious wines at a reasonable price.

My favorite of their wines is the white, called Regaleali Bianco ($15). This crispy, tasty wine is a blend of Inzolia (47%), Grecanico (22%), Catarratto (25%), and Chardonnay (6%).

Some of those grapes may sound a tad obscure, but the island has always maintained a slightly independent reputation, so the fact that Sicily has developed their own versions of grapes is not a surprise. What is a surprise – and a pleasant one at that – is how flinty the aromas are to match up with the nicely acidic flavor. This is an ideal wine for pre-dinner conversation, or, even better, as an accompaniment to a lightly sauced pasta topped with fresh Gulf seafood, especially redfish.
