Gluten-Free Wild Wood Bakehouse Shutters Guadalupe Location

North Campus gluten-free restaurant and baked goods shop Wild Wood Bakehouse has closed its doors. On Feb. 24, the Celiac-friendly establishment posted on its Facebook page that it was shuttering its Guadalupe location and encouraged people to visit their second location, Wilder Wood, at 1300 E. Seventh.

In the comments of the post, Wild Wood staff described the closure as a merging of both locations, citing the lack of demand for gluten-free dining in Austin to support two restaurants.

Wild Wood, which offered a wide array of gluten-free baked goods from cupcakes to vegan bread, opened in the space formerly occupied by El Greco, the Mediterranean restaurant made infamous by Gordon Ramsay in the fall of 2012. For six and a half years, the shop offered a haven for gluten-averse diners, including a much-beloved Sunday brunch buffet.

Although Wilder Wood, which opened in 2017, is thriving, the closure of the centrally located Wild Wood leaves a gap in service for those who live north of UT and who have come to rely on the allergy-friendly offerings. Says Christy Doolen, who frequented the gluten-free restaurant for her family’s bread, “I’m sad to see Wild Wood close. It has been a great resource for our family in providing special baked treats and bread for the kids. I may have to go back to baking my own bread again, which is time intensive. I’ll also check out their other location, but it is not as convenient as the Guadalupe location was.”

According to the Wild Wood Facebook page, Wilder Wood will offer a 25% discount on all customer tabs over the March 1 weekend, through the end of Sunday brunch. Wilder Wood’s menu includes a full bar and Tex-Mex fare like fajitas and street tacos, plus country-fried steak and chicken, burgers, salads, and breakfast/brunch service on Sundays.
