Austin’s Wednesday Foodie Events

By Emily Beyda, January 16, 2019, 7:00am, On the Range

Just because the federal government is at a halt doesn’t mean the local food scene is!

On Wednesday, January 16, from 7-9pm, La Condesa will be hosting the next installation of its Know Your Agave series at the Flour House, focusing on bacanora and raicilla. These spirited classes, led by La Condesa’s resident agave expert Josh Prewitt, are designed to help guests expand their agave-based knowledge beyond mezcal and tequila. For $50, you’ll have the chance to taste and explore spirits from the regions of Jalisco and Sanora, as well as enjoy a curated tasting of off-the-menu snacks by Executive Chef Rick Lopez, designed to guide and complement your palate along the way.

To celebrate their third anniversary on Burnet Road, the folks at Barley Swine are offering $30 off their tasting menu until Thursday, January 17, meaning visitors will pay $65 instead of $95 to nibble their way through locally sourced seasonal delights. Think marinated shrimp with cucumber and lemongrass, fried sweet potato tamales, snapper with turnip and basil, and so much more.

Although most of you well-intentioned resolution setters will be over your juice phase by the time it hits, it’s National Green Juice Day (yes, really) on January 26, and to celebrate in a spirit that honors your health food burnout, Stella San Jac is slinging a special green-juice-inspired Mad Mojito. The drink – which includes fresh-juiced cucumber, jalapeño, lemon/lime, and basil juice, as well as more classic mojito ingredients like aviation gin, simple syrup, and being shaken with mint – is $12 and will be served all day.

As a show of support to federal employees and their families who have found themselves impacted by the government shutdown, Punch Bowl Social is offering all federal government employees a 25% discount on all food, beverages, and games, until the shutdown ends. Just show your government identification card to your server before ordering.

Shake Shack – which, with their monthly running clubs, has emerged as a somewhat unlikely favorite of the Austin running community – will be offering offering a complimentary shake with any in-store purchases for 3M Half Marathon runners who show their racing bib at any of the two Shake Shacks in Austin on Sunday, January 20, so half-marathon runners can re-up on all those lost calories.
