Bacon Reopens Today

Though some retail outlets in the neighborhood are still working to recover, Bacon is the last damaged restaurant to reopen after Shoal Creek rose out of its banks on May 25 – wrecking some havoc in stores and businesses along North Lamar between Ninth and 12th Streets.

The cozy old 10th Street cottage overlooking Shoal Creek has seen its share of flood damage over the years, but once the water receded and the mud was washed away, it turns out the Memorial Day flood didn't damage anything that couldn't be repaired or replaced. Bacon co-owner Ryan Reynolds was distressed when the early word circulated that the restaurant might be a total loss because that was certainly not the case. He and his partners always intended to come back.

As is was, Bacon was only closed for two weeks and managed to retain their entire staff of 18. "We were able to find many of them a few hours of work during the cleaning process, and lucky for us, they were all able to tough it out. We're glad to have everyone back," Reynolds told us.

Reynolds gives plenty of credit to the water remediation and sanitizing procedures of Austin's Steam Team for getting the damage cleaned up and the restaurant safe to reopen so quickly. The interior of the restaurant has a fresh coat of paint and clean and ready to roll. He's also pleased to report they were able to save the original hardwood floors which will be sanded and sealed this weekend.

They did have to replace some refrigeration equipment in their their back storage building and there will be new outdoor picnic tables in time for brunch service this weekend. The Bacon kitchen, however, emerged relatively unscathed and the kitchen crew has been in there a couple of days prepping all the components of their popular menu items from scratch. Bacon reopens for business today, June 9.
