Original Omelettry Closing May 4

After serving pancakes and eggs in a converted root beer stand for more than 37 years, the Carpenter family will move their Austin landmark eatery, the Omelettry, to brand new facilities this spring.

Founder Kenny Carpenter assures his longtime clientele that the new Omelettry will be just as friendly and funky as the original when they take up residence in a new space where the plumbing doesn't back up during busy Saturday shifts and the electricity isn't always overloaded. The Fifties-era building will be torn down to make way for a mixed-use development as Burnet Road continues the ongoing evolution from sleepy to trendy.

As sad as second generation co-owner Jesse Carpenter is to see the original go, he's excited about operating in a space that's been built to suit the needs of a busy restaurant. "I love this old building, I grew up here," Jesse says, "but I won't miss all the work and upkeep we've had to do to keep things going. We know folks are attached to the building, but we're more than just this place. The soul of the Omelettry is in the food, the staff, and the community it creates. All that is going with us." Look for the new Omelettry to open in the shopping center at 4631 Airport Blvd. sometime in mid-to-late May.
