Third generation of venerable Lockhart family comes to Bee Cave

Barbecue lovers have been eagerly awaiting the opening of Schmidt Family Barbecue (12532 FM 2244) since cousins Keith Schmidt and Susie Schmidt Franks and her husband, Chad Franks, announced they were bringing Lockhart barbecue to the Hill Country Galleria.

We were lucky enough to be invited to the soft opening dinner on Friday night. We got to try a little bit of everything, visit with retired Kreuz Market owner Rick Schmidt, and Kenny Pailes shot plenty of pictures. According to Chad Franks, the third cousin in the original business plan, John Fullilove, formerly of Smitty's Market, is taking a hiatus from the barbecue business and is not involved in this outlet. As much as we enjoyed the brisket and sausage, our favorite dishes that night were smoked ham and turkey breast with a tasty side of Mexican beans.

Our Wes Marshall went by on opening day to find the lines long and the staff overwhelmed; I'm guessing they've got some kinks to work out. But what a great location. There's plenty of dining room space for parties and Chad Franks is keeping his two Bewley smokers packed with meats to delight the crowd.
