Connally High Culinarians Bring Home the Gold Again
Area culinary students win gold for second year in a row

Earlier this month, culinary students from 18 high schools in San Antonio, Austin, and South Texas competed in the annual South Texas Culinary Challenge at Samuel Clemens High School in Schertz, Texas. Students from the Pflugerville's John B. Connally High School culinary program garnered multiple wins.
Chef Mike Erickson, director of the Connally High culinary program, reports that his students brought home a slew of prizes for the second year in a row.
The Mystery Basket competition required the young cooks to create a dish based on ingredients they discover in a mystery basket in a finite amount of time, much like the competitors on the Food Network's Chopped. This year, senior culinary students Ashley Jones and JoVaun Young took first place in the Mystery Basket category.
The Cake Decorating competition required that the competitors bring an already-decorated cake to the show. Junior Evelyn Santos won first place with her chef cake. (Chef Erickson tells us Evelyn was so encouraged by her win here that she plans to enter a cake in the upcoming "That Takes The Cake" Cake and Sugar Art Show on Feb. 24.) Senior Dominique Brown took third place in the decorating category and fourth place in the cupcake-baking division.
Teams of culinary students from both Connally High School and Travis High School are gearing up to compete a the Texas Pro-Start Regional Culinary Competition in Humble during the weekend of Feb. 11-12 in hopes they'll qualify for the state competition in Waco in March.
