M83 Highlights From Stubb's 5/18

If you missed the show, here is a little taste.

On May 18th, M83 performed their 100th show at Stubb’s, where the sold-out crowd experienced a spectacular ocular journey and audible feast. If you missed out, or want to relive the energetic electronic performance, fill that void with this quick recap and video.

With a name derived from an abbreviation for the spiral galaxy Messier 83, the French electropop group, founded by front man Anthony Gonzalez, produces synthy-dance beats of galactic proportions. M83 is a name befitting a band with such an expansive sound that seems to stretch from millions of light-years away, transcending space and time as you’re absorbed into another aural plane.

As a prelude to M83 taking the stage at Stubb’s, an alien creature—pictured on the cover of their latest album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming—walks out slowly and stands with arms extended, as if coaxing the crowd into a hypnotic state. The music builds to a blaring decibel, summoning complete attention, just as the band members appear. Commence an exhilarating Stubb’s show and non-stop dance party with this energized crowd.

A sea of arms rise with the vocals carried on synth sounds waves as each beat fires a massive wall of sound at the crowd. Piercing beams of multicolored light flood your vision as the amps’ vibrations pound into your chest. It’s the ultimate sensory overload, but one your eyes and ears warmly welcome. Only seconds into "Midnight City," the first single from Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, everyone is cheering and moving their feet. The crowd is feeding off of the energy pulsing from the stage, while the band is equally elated by the positive, contagious vibes moving throughout Stubb’s; an ambiance appropriate for this intergalactic electro set.

Of the many highlights from the evening, a young Macaulay Culkin doppelganger, straight out of The Pagemaster, was up front, rocking out the entire show. This kid never ceased his full devotion to playing out every note and beat, pounding his fists on his air drums and turning toward the crowd, encouraging everyone to dance. M83 definitely took notice of their biggest little fan. After the encore, M83 front man, Anthony, jumped off stage and scooped the kid up, parading him victoriously along the stage barrier. In a very “rock and roll” manner or freeze frame ending from The Breakfast Club, the kid triumphantly shot one arm into the air, which received a roar of cheers from the crowd. Way to set the bar high for all your future concerts, kid.

Watch the video below for a quick look back at M83’s recent performance at Stubb’s, along with a few stills highlighting the epic moments.
