Austin lit news is heating up

News/Print

From a history of Austin to a Hot Sauce Festival book signing, all our local books news is good news.

• The University of Texas Press has announced its next big publishing project: the Texas Bookshelf. Sixteen books written by UT faculty will be released over the course of five years, starting with a history of Texas written by Michener Center for Writers prof Stephen Harrigan.

• Speaking of whom, Harrigan will join author Jeff Kerr at the Austin History Center (810 Guadalupe) on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 7pm, to discuss Kerr's latest work, Seat of Empire: The Embattled Birth of Austin, Texas. The event is free and open to the public; visit www.austinhistorycenter.org for complete details.

GateHouse Media is opening the Center for News and Design in Austin this fall, bringing some 200 journalism jobs to the city. The conglomerate "operates 431 newspapers and 405 related websites," for which the Austin office will offer centralized copy editing and page design.

• The Chronicle is hosting a book signing and frozen cocktail hour at Garrido's (360 Nueces #10) on Saturday, Aug. 24, 5:30pm. The event features Austin Breakfast Tacos, The Hot Sauce Cookbook, Nuevo Tex-Mex, and the Sriracha Cookbook. Dig in!
