Kids Say the Darnedest Things

Celebrating young writers at tomorrow's O. Henry Writing Club reception

Kids Say the Darnedest Things

It's anybody's guess what the publishing industry will look like tomorrow and 20 years from now. But even as traditional formats go belly up, we're betting the imagination well will never run dry. Want proof? Check out tomorrow's young writers showcase at the BookPeople.

The O. Henry Museum's Writing Club, dedicated to cultivating writing in elementary and middle school aged kids, will hold a reading and reception on Saturday (4/24) from 2-4pm at BookPeople (603 N. Lamar). The original pieces of 10 Austin kids will be read aloud by writers culled from Austin's literary community, including Austin noir writer Jesse Sublett, American Short Fiction editor Jill Meyers, Newspaper Blackout poet Austin Kleon, and yours truly.

Who knows? You may be hearing the early works of future famous writers.

And speaking of the O. Henry Museum, you can check out some famous writers now at Wednesday's Writers in a Room event, which gathers Nick Flynn (The Ticking Is the Bomb), John Phillip Santos (The Farthest Home Is in an Empire of Fire), and Jake Silverstein (Nothing Happened and Then It Did) for "good old-fashioned conversation." The event is free and open to the public; 4/28, 8pm, at the O. Henry Museum (409 E. Fifth St.).
