Five Arty Things to Do: Oct. 27-29

Go ahead, fool – say the word “spooktacular” one more time, see what happens.

1) Death becomes you, sure, but especially when you’re still alive to enjoy it. And, hey, you’re part of that whole Halloweeny let’s-all-celebrate-mortality indulgence this weekend, right? Now try partying down with an eclectic crowd from the visual-arts community that this city (barely) supports: Dress up as the rider of that palest horse and dance your fuckin’ tibias off at Co-Lab’s Fear the Reaper hullaballoo that’ll be spilling out of their soon-to-be-demolished digs on Congress on Saturday night, mere blocks away from the State Capitol where ol’ Greg Abbott never stops with his oppressive-zombie-in-a-wheelchair masquerade.

2) Oh, but then there’s the Rude Mechs’ When Doves CrEYE BALL, also on Saturday, bringing you a diverse array of performative wonderment and reason for dancing (and drinking and nomming), all predicated on celebrating, dearly beloved, the human phenomenon formerly and forever after known as Prince. The V-I-Prelude of the night’s got Foot Patrol’s TJ Wade channeling the purple for you, the whole shebang boasts that Graham Reynolds on turntables, and we can only imagine what lovesexy moves the Frank Wo/Men Collective will bring to the fantastic fore amid all the revelry at Springdale Station.

3) Hit the river for a scintillating sunset soirée this Sunday, as the Alamo Drafthouse and Local Opera Local Artists team up to offer you a screening of that Cher movie Moonstruck at the Ritz and then put you aboard a Capital Cruise double-decker for cocktails and a live, full-concert version of LOLA’s popular La Femme Bohème as Austin’s zebra-mussel-infested waters roll on by and Sol’s descent turns the planet’s backdrop the color of a faded UT Longhorns T-shirt.

4) Things been getting mighty witchy up in here lately, but they’ve always been so in the realm of storytelling, in the world of literature – and Taisia Kitaiskaia and Katy Horan champion that fact with their new book, Literary Witches, a compilation of profiles and illustrations that instantly passes muster via inclusion of Octavia Butler and Shirley Jackson among those considered, and more than passes several shades of muster, because, well, Kitaiskaia and Horan themselves, long may their collaborations continue after Sunday afternoon’s release-conjuring event at BookPeople.

5) We’re just gonna point out that those nonpareil comedians Vanessa Gonzalez and Andrew Murphy are co-headlining the Velveeta Room for two shows on Friday night, and then we’re gonna sit back & relax, because now our tell-you-about-the-best-shit-in-town work here is done.
