Moontower Review: Wanda Sykes

If Wanda Sykes’ roughly hour-and-fifteen minute set at the Paramount Theatre Friday night could be summarized in one word and two things, they’d be “titties.”

“I used to be a big-titted girl,” she began, kicking-off her second-ever appearance at the Moontower Comedy Festival. “I had real big titties. You know, big, big titties. Where you go to reach for something on the top shelf and you knock everything over.

"So I had to get a breast-reduction, because my back was sore and it was just causing all kind of problems. But my big titties saved my life, they did, because during the reduction they found out that I had Stage 0 breast cancer. Yeah, I know! I was very fortunate to find it so early. And also, I have such a strong history of breast cancer on my mother’s side that I was like, ‘No, fuck this, just get rid of ‘em. Cut ‘em off.’ So I had a double-mastectomy, because they give you all kind of options, and one of ‘em was, ‘You can come back every three months and we can look in and check on you.’ I’m like, ‘Every three months?! I can’t even keep up with the oil changes on my car! So I ain’t gonna stay on top of shit! Just get me some new titties, fuck that. So now I’m a 51-year-old woman walking around with the titties of a 22-year-old.”

No stranger to the Paramount stage, Sykes had previously performed at Moontower in 2012, its second year. This time around, the 51-year-old stand-up again wisecracked about the love of her life, a dainty-sounding French woman she married in 2008, has a pack of white children with, and who evidently speaks fairly broken English to unintentionally great comedic effect. Playing and slaying Moontower twice in the last four years, one wonders what Sykes might do for a second encore if she lends her considerable talent to the festival once more. Fingers crossed: But hopefully she and Larry David can form a comedy team and channel their contentious dynamic in Curb Your Enthusiasm to give the greatest gift of all, circa 2019. Now who wouldn’t want to see that?
