Star of Texas Bed & Breakfast on the outskirts of Brownwood is like visiting a secret cabin in the woods.

Secluded, quiet, scenic, and comfortable; the Star of Texas has everything you would want for a weekend away. They specialize in small wedding and elopement packages with Don Morelock, the owner, officiating, but there's no reason the rest of us shouldn't enjoy a relaxing stay in the country, too.

With only four units, this is a rather exclusive club. One unit is a Victorian cottage, another is a cottage in the woods, and the two others are part of a duplex with a porch overlooking two ponds that attract wildlife at dusk and dawn. All but one of the units has a private hot tub. A fifth room is a tepee that isn't used during extreme temperatures.

Don and his wife Debbie are artists, and the short hiking trail through the woods that they decorated is not to be missed. Lake Brownwood and Brownwood State Park are nearby. There are also five wineries within driving distance of the inn. Or you could just sit on the porch and enjoy life.

Surprisingly, Brownwood has some stand-out dining options. But nothing beats having breakfast prepared by Debbie and delivered to your room.

Star of Texas Bed & Breakfast is just a few minutes away from Main Street in Brownwood. To check on availability, call 325/646-4128 or go to www.star-of-texas.com.
