Barney Gumble on The Simpsons is based on the Crazy Guggenheim character on The Jackie Gleason Show (played by Frank Fontaine). Guggenheim was a rum-soaked drunk who would chat with Gleason in comedy skits in which Gleason played Joe the Bartender.
