GRASSROOTS 101, QUEER-STYLE
Last weekend's national protest in response to the passage of anti-gay propositions across the country was a call-up to sideline queers, a call to action and involvement in your community for the sake of our families. Pundits (including this one) went nuts over the young age skew of the grassroots organizers who launched the multicity event less than one week prior to its scheduled date. The wildfire nature of the Join the Impact movement heralds a new wave of activists and potential for our struggle. It's 'bout time.
Why stop there? Tonight is another opportunity to engage in Grassroots 101, Queer-Style, as this evening is the 10th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance and will be observed at 6:30pm at Austin City Hall. The event began as one vigil to commemorate vivacious Boston club denizen and eventual murder victim Rita Hester back in 1998 in San Francisco. The vigil sparked similar memorials that have set off waves of activism across the globe. If you are new to queer community or still looking in from the sidelines, welcome. Join us. It's a long row, and we need as many oars as we can get. See Gay Place Listings for more.
