Happy New Year ... and Thanks!

Happy New Year ... and Thanks!

The turn of the New Year is generally swamped by crass commercialism and phony sentiment. Even so, such milestones offer an opportunity for reflection on the past months and years. Perhaps no journey has been so eventful over the past two decades than the one experienced by those infected with, and those affected by, HIV/AIDS.

There has been great suffering along the way, and that struggle continues today, even if at a less-fevered pitch. At the same time, however, there have been amazing demonstrations of great courage, commitment, faith, love, and good humor. For those examples of positive humanity in the face of such trials, we are grateful: It is from this -- whether by HIV-positive people, volunteers, supporters, or fellow professionals -- that we draw strength. Thank you.

Our gratitude goes also to those who encourage our efforts, whether with kind words or with financial support. Especially considering the present political and economic realities, we are grateful for Austin's being the special place that it is. Thank you.

As we enter 2004, we hope that the road ahead will be easier. We hope that your kind support of AIDS care and prevention will continue. And we hope for significant progress in treatment and prevention effectiveness. We thank Austin for caring and wish all a Happy New Year.

Sandy Bartlett

Community Education Coordinator, AIDS Services of Austin
