Public Notice

Public Notice is noticing a lot of public service types getting into the holiday spirit. Events big and small are happening all over town, as are opportunities to give, give, give, and give some more.

We love kismetty coincidences: We just so happen to be running a lovely three-story spread relating to bikers and motorcycles in this week's Features section, and what crosses our desk at the last minute? Yup, an event full of hairy bikers! Around 400 bikers, to be imprecise. Big Dave's Annual Toy Run will thunder across the Hill Country this Sun, Dec 12, 12:40-1:30pm. And even though the big bruisers will be wrapping and bringing their own gifts and toys to run, we bet the big softies would welcome extra presents. Who for? Well the bikers will be hauling their hogs (and escorting Mr. & Mrs. S. Claus) over to the Austin Children's Shelter Annual Holiday Party for the kids. Call the center to get the specifics on what type of gifts they are accepting for kids ages 0-17. We hear that the suits from the center will be straddling some gleaming machines themselves for the run. The bikers will meet at the Moon River Bar and wind up at the LCRA building on Lake Austin Blvd. 258-4570.

  • To top it all off, also on Sun, Dec 12, a whole bunch of other bikers will roar through the Holiday Food Run thrown by Harley-Davidson to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank. The horde will converge at the Tropical Heat Cafe, 900 E. Braker, with the last bike out at noon and first bike in at 6pm. After that, there's a Free Buffet, 6:30-7:30pm, and some live music. Donation is $5 per person. 837-9396. Oh, how we love thematic synergy. Mother Rock Star (MRS) presents the WOMB Show. WOMB means Women of the Music Business. The show is an all-night extravaganza, tonight, Thu, Dec 9, at the Red Eyed Fly featuring a songwriter's round of Tawnya LoRae, Elizabeth Lee, and Terri Lord at 6:30pm, Girl Robots at 8:30pm, New Orleans' Won Ton Lust at 9:30pm, Austin's own Funny HaHa featuring ex-Horsie and MRSer Julia Austin and ex-Veronican Molly Gove at 10:30pm, Annyland from L.A. at 11:30pm, and ex-Ed Hallers Pong at 12:30am. Whew. The thing is a celebration of MRS' second year in existence and is a Benefit for the Austin Children's Shelter. The fun starts with a Reception (kids are welcome), and admission is $5 for nonMRS members. Bring cool new gifts for kids and teens to put in the ACS barrel at the Fly front door. 473-BUGG. -- Here's a whizbang list of upcoming Holiday Benefit Events.
