Public Notice

Pull the Jumpsuit Outta the Closet, Elvis

... and Shout™ out those peanut-butter-and-banana stains, bay-beh, it's time again for Viva Las Vegas! the annual star-studded, Elvis-encrusted, casino-style fundraiser for AIDS Services of Austin (ASA) (not Project Transitions, as we erroneously stated last week, sorry-sorry-sorry-sorry!) and its award-winning legal program, the Capital Area AIDS Legal Project. This year's hunk of burning love event is Sat, Jul 10, 8pm-midnight at the Austin Music Hall. Tickets are on sale right now, $10 advance. They go up to $15 at the door. Behind the door, there's gonna be plenty of craps, blackjack, roulette, door prizes, silent and live auctions (Bid on airline tickets! Where would you go? To Las Vegas, o'course, pussycat!), a Vegas-style buffet, a drawing for a 1999 Honda Civic, and the ever-lovin' Love Me Tender Wedding Chapel. 451-2273.

Undisputed Truth

Boy, oh, boy! We are as full of mistakes this week as an Irish Catholic family. Back in our "Divorce Special" Public Notice (Vol. 18, No. 32), we gave out a completely wrong-o phone number for the Dispute Resolution Center. Our apologies for that nasty gaffe. Here's the correct one: 371-0033.

Missing Persons

Oh, great. Putting this notice here, next to the last notice and that Irish Catholic family crack, is sure to generate the letters. Look, Ireland finally has a chance at some peace, according to the latest accords -- so let's not add to the fray, 'kay? All kidding aside, our very own Austin Celtic Association will be hosting a Missing Partners Night, a fundraiser for their efforts, Thu, Jul 8, 8pm at Gaby & Mo's Coffee House, 1809 Manor, just east of I-35. It seems that their mandolinist is wandering around in County Cork and their vocalist is torching it up in some Taiwanese night club. Don't ask us. Just go. Maybe they'll let you sing or sit in for a spell. Or maybe just be quiet and listen to Two O'Clock Courage and Widening Gyre, the night's featured artists. 708-1877.

Tot Shot Slots

Don't forget: The Austin/Travis County Health & Human Services Department Immuni-zation Program is still Seeking Clinic Volunteers to ease the flow of the traditionally packed July and August immunization clinics. Volunteers will help guide clinic clients through the step-by-step immunization process -- from sign-up to health screen, to nurse and needle, to the end. They are especially encouraging bilingualists and folks who can commit to at least an entire shift at a time (and there is plenty of variety in the slots still available) Folks are needed for the Far South Health Center on Stassney and the Northeast Health Center on Ed Bluestein. 469-2135.

You Haul It

There's nothing better than getting out in the Austin wild, soaking in the rays, and making a difference. What better way to get in your outdoorism and your volunteerism all in one fell swoop? This weekend, Sat, Jul 10, 9am-noon, the Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve, 805 N. Capital of Texas Hwy., will be hosting a Trail Maintenance Day. Bring your gloves and boots, and strong Texas backbone, and help the Wildernessers repair portions of the trail, control erosion, and make the trails safer for everyone. While you're there, sign up as a member to get copies of their newsletter and get regular up-to-date info on their wild Wilderness Walks, native Indian Lore Sessions, and popular Stargazing/Moonlighting Nights. 327-7622.

Knit-1, Purl-2

Don't be a nit-wit, a nit-picker, or a Nittany Lion (???), just pull up a rocker (not Sammy Hagar or even Gibby Haynes), whip out some yarns (and we don't mean tall tales about Uncle Lou's goiter), and get ready to put us all in stitches for a darned good cause. The American Red Cross of Central Texas wants you, especially if you are a Knitter or Crocheter. Now all of you aficionados of West Coast Punk Rock: Mind you, we are not talking about Red Kross or the Knitters featuring ex-members of X. We are talking about the Red Cross, the helping-people people, and real live knitters, wild wielders of hook and needle, thread and yarn, to make lap blankets and baby booties for the elderly and young, respectively. Last holiday season, Red Crossers donated over 40 of these types of welcome items to folks who were so grateful to receive them. You don't even have to leave your house. (Rocker not included.) 928-4271.
