Troubled kids come from someplace. Are parents to blame? Violent entertainment? Economic disparities? What makes kids go down the wrong path? A better question might be, what makes a supposedly progressive society turn its head on its next generation? Camp Fire Boys & Girls not only encourages kids toward higher ground but also encourages adults to not turn their heads as they struggle to get there. Kids start in the Camp Fire program as early as kindergarten. By the time they get to high school, they work towards achieving the Camp Fire's highest honor, the Wohelo Medallion - a task which involves over 300 hours of volunteer work. The kids striving for this distinction are known as Horizon Youth. This year, Austin's Horizon Youth have the opportunity to attend the National Youth Conference at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Here's where you come in. The kids need cash. They can raise a certain amount of this money, but really, bake sales, car washes, and the like can only go so far (ummmmm... maybe Amarillo?). So how about it, corporate deep-pockets-types? Yeah, you. Give them a call? 462-2777.

* The Summer Teen Recreation Academy is run by the Austin Parks & Recreation Department. The summer fun program provides sports clinics and tourneys, arts, dance, special events, and nature study for kids 12-17. The academy runs at participating sites (see below) noon-6pm, Mon-Fri, now until Fri, Jul 24. The fun, safe, and supervised alternative is available at: Baker Secondary; Burnet, Covington, Dobie, Fulmore, and Webb Middle Schools; Martin Junior High; and Garza and McCallum High Schools. 480-3014.

Music to the People

People's Community Clinic has been in the people business for over 28 years, providing comprehensive primary care to so many of us here in Austin over this period. Waterloo Icehouse on Sixth is the site for the People's Music Series concert series to benefit the health clinic which has taken care of us. The lineup is impressive: Tonight, Thu, Jun 11, Ana Egge performs. The next in the series is Thu, Jul 9 with Christine Albert & Chris Gage. Not a Stale Sale
or Square Affair

The fine folks at the Horseshoe Lounge are getting out from behind the bar for an afternoon of concerted yard sale-ing. The South Lamar Bizarre Bazaar is a fundraiser for the Juvenile Leukemia Society. It brings together over 40 area merchants in the "courtyard"-like parking lot of the Horseshoe, 2024-2040 S. United We Shop!

Austin Bahá'í presents Race Unity Day, Sun, Jun 14, noon-6pm. This year, instead of holding the event at a local park, the message will be brought to as many Austinites as possible - at the mall.
