Here Today, Gone to Mauro?

Unless you've been vacationing in Irkutsk, you already know about the Triangle, 22 acres of state-owned land, bordered by 45th, Guadalupe, and Lamar, that has been the focus of a heated development debate. The Planning Commission has already voted a strong denial on the proposed mega-development for the site; a City Council vote is scheduled for today, Thu, May 14. Trouble is, the city doesn't have the final say. The state has the option to override the city's decision with its own special board of review, chaired by General Land Office Commissioner (and Dem gubernatorial candidate) Garry Mauro.

Neighborhood organizers are mounting a major Letter-Writing Campaign to Mauro and other state review board members. Write to Garry Mauro via e-mail: [email protected] or to the address below. Send copies to William F. Warnick and C. Louis Renaud, School Land Board. Send mail to: General Land Office, 1700 N. Congress, Austin, TX 78701.

Be True to Your Pool

Hey, beach bunnies! They don't call this the Third Coast for nada. We have some of the best swimming this side of having gills. Here in town, the city Parks & Rec Department is Seeking Lifeguards for Summer Pool Hours. 350 positions are available ($6-9/hr.), citywide. So if you like the way you look in red, and want to learn more about lifeguard training and CPR certification, call. 476-4521.

Fling Season

The temp is climbing and the sun hangs low on the horizon longer with each dusky evening. Sweet Austin is in the waning days of spring, headed smack dab for the drowsy yawning days of sweltering summer heat. The Evening at Umlauf, Austin's premiere outdoor sculpture garden, Thu, May 14, 6-9pm promises just the tonic for a lovely, lazy evening. Classical guitarist Jim Lawrie and gospel-sters Johnny Ray Watson With His Image will keep the auction silent and the tunes a-flowing. The evening will benefit Austin Metropolitan Ministries. 472-7627.

Spring Cleaning

It's almost summer and you haven't even cracked a rag to begin those spring chores, have you? Start off by eliminating clutter. Open up your closet, attic, or hidey-hole and Donate your groovy glad-rags and doo-dads to the Austin Family House. The local safe place for women in recovery will host a Benefit Garage Sale Sat, May 30, 8am-noon at 2604 Paramount. Donate now; they'll even arrange a pick-up. 441-2086.

No Neighing

Hollywood über-hunk Robert Redford will donate the Austin Premiere of his new flick, The Horse Whisperer to S.O.S. and Save Barton Creek Association, tonight, Thu, May 14 at the Alamo Drafthouse, 6 & 9:15pm. A Reception, next door at Gilligan's,
8-10pm, will feature soundtrack stars Don Walser & His Pure Texas Band. 477-2320, ext. 47.

Slather It On...

Head on over to Ben's Long-branch BBQ, I-35 & E. 11th Street, and order Barbecue Plate Tickets to benefit the Austin Minority Health Network's Byron Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Fund. This year, three scholarships will be awarded, and you can help (and help yourself to some gooooood Q!). The tix are good anytime during Junteenth Week, Mon-Sat, June 15-20. 474-5019.

Then Work It Off!

Get out there and shake it.

* You'll be gasping all right, at the Great Austin to Shiner Pedal (G.A.S.P.), benefiting Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Sun, May 31, 8am. The 92-mile trek takes hearty cyclists from Austin to the historic Spoetzel Brewery in Shiner, Texas, the home of our beloved Shiner Bock, which many will be quaffing at race's end. Oh, by the way, there are rest stops (with energy bars, fruit, and beverages) and a return ride home; they won't leave you in Shiner-heaven, open-mouthed under a beer tap. Wheeeeeze! 416-0280.

* This weekend, lesbos and their pals can work on the old love muscle at the big Women's Drag Show to benefit the Lezbolympics and Women With AIDS. The drag party features k.d. lame, Dolly Pardon Me, Patsy Whine, the ZZ Topp girls, and more. The bent gender showgrrrls will appear at the 'Bout Time Volleyball Courts, Sat, May 16. 990-5404.
