Let's ALLGO Out & Party

Don't forget! Your unlucky Valentine's Day (remember it falls right after Friday the 13th this year) might be a tad luckier, especially if you spend Friday night at the Austin Latino/a Lesbian & Gay Organization (ALLGO) Baile de Amor, Fri, Feb 13, 9am-1pm at Austin North Hilton & Towers, 6000 Middle Fiskville. Tickets are $15 in advance and $25 at the door.

ALLGO/Informe-SIDA is also putting out an emergency call to gather donations and assistance for their Raymond T. Hernandez Memorial Fund, named for the AIDS and civil rights activist who died of AIDS in 1988. The fund provides emergency assistance for basic living needs to people of color living with HIV. 472-2001.

Safety in Mergers

Our local team of women's crisis services is indeed now a team. The Center for Battered Women and Austin Rape Crisis Center have joined forces to become Safe Place. Here is all their new pertinent mailing address and phone number information: PO Box 19454, Austin, TX 78760. Administration, 385-5181 (Fax, 385-0662, TDD, 482-0691); Domestic Violence Hotline (voice & TDD), 928-9070; Sexual Assault Hotline, 440-7273 (TDD, 440-7363).

Run to You

There will be miles and miles of smiles as area school kids participating in the Marathon Kids running program enjoy their Final Mile Celebration next weekend. 14,000 kids from more than five area school districts are participating in the physical fitness program. More than 8,000 are expected to run their final leg, along with five Olympians, Sat, Feb 14, 10am at Auditorium Shores. The general public is invited to cheer the kids on. 477-1259.

High Intensity

It's probably too late to tell you about today's Committee in Solidarity with Chiapas & Mexico Thu, Feb 5 Public Demonstration at the Governor's Mansion, 11:30am-1pm.

But there's plenty of time to tell you about Chiapachanga, the Benefit for the Refugees of Chiapas, Thu, Feb 19, with Big Game Hunter, Concierto Grosso, and Roots & Wisdom. Funds raised from this event will go to those displaced from their homes as a result of the recent massacre. Regular Committee meetings are every Saturday, 4pm at Resistencia Bookstore, 2210-B S. First. 416-8885.

The Agony of Victory

...usually involves some major fundraising before the starting gun is even loaded. Austin Olympians are no exception. In this case, we are referring to two local Austin teams heading for the Gay Games in Amsterdam this August. Row Team Austin (RTA) is made up of over 40 local strokers; they have a web address and contact number for further info: http://www.flash.net/~kscanlon/ams/mainams.html or 708-9393.

If the space taken up by your household junk is in the running for its own Zip code, consider donating some of it to Team Clifford, the one-man powerhouse heading for Amsterdam as the first Person Living with AIDS to ever compete in the Gay Games Bodybuilding competition. Team Clifford seeks what ever support you can muster. 448-4508.

Black Is...

A city-wide Celebration of Heritage is this weekend's Black History Month event at (and co-sponsored by) Kealing Junior High, Sat, Feb 7, 10am-2pm. The event is free and open to the public, and the kids of Kealing along with Austin Parks & Rec, Ujamaa, and KFIT radio promise fun for all ages, gospel music, games, prizes, educational displays, and a variety of food and ware vendors. 414-3214 or 474-2806.

In honor of Black History Month, the U.S. Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration is offering free posters of great Americans like the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the first African-American Olympic gold medal gymnast Dominique Dawes. The posters encourage kids to reach for their dreams and to not rely on drugs to do it. 800/729-6686.
