Blow Up the Spot?

Hipocalypse and Skam Productions, a non profit Eastside youth program, presents a benefit, Basic Skillz, for a Cultural Arts Center for Youth in East Austin on Sat, Oct 18, at two locations: The Art Showcase, featuring Austin's best graffiti artists, will line the walls of Mexic-Arte, 412 Congress, 6-10pm; the Music Showcase will be held at the Victory Grill, featuring Hip-Hop artists and local poets. They promise to "blow up the spot." They also are looking for Volunteers to help with future projects. 480-9373.

Choice: You've Still Got It

...because folks have fought hard to preserve it. Why not celebrate with those who continue to fight? The Texas Abortion & Reproductive Rights Action League (TARAL) is throwing a big party, their 11th annual Celebration of Choice, Fri, Oct 17, 7-10pm. Items for a Silent Auction have been donated by such choosey supporters as Maya Angelou, Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock, Julia Childs, Arnold Palmer, and Oliver Stone. Executive Director of the Texas Freedom Network, Cecile Richards, will speak, the Texana Dames will sing, and you will dance, dance, dance. 462-1661.

10K Can-Can

This weekend is the 10th year that AIDS Services of Austin has asked you to walk. We are into the second decade of The Disease, and despite AZT cocktails, protease inhibitors, and all sorts of new medical revelations (or perhaps political atmospheres which don't inhibit as many of those revelations?), suffering still exists. ASA has been Austin's hub for angels of mercy through this whole thing. AIDS Walk Austin, Sun, Oct 19, noon-5pm, begins at Waterloo Park. Bring pledges and Non-Perishable Food Items to help replenish the Helping Hands Food Pantry, which serves over 374 clients monthly. 406-6153.

Not Out of the Woods Yet

While we're on the subject of can-cans and non-perishables, our local Camp Fire Boys & Girls are scurrying about, hunting, gathering, and foraging all the food items their little hands can carry in their annual Food Drive for Austin Hospice. Each Camp Fire club will come up with its own way of collecting. Some will go door-to-door, some will set up tables at storefronts, some will trick-or-treat on Halloween. This project helps kids learn about the hospice program while making an effective contribution. 462-2777.

Naturally...

REI is seeking Volunteers to help at the Bull Creek Greenbelt Trail Work Day, Sat, Oct 25, 9am-3pm. They need 130 trail-heads for this annual service project to rebuild trails. They ask that you pre-register at REI, 9901 Capital of Texas Hwy, N. There will be an appreciation party to feed all the hearty workers after the day is done. 343-5550.

Handy

...Or perhaps ladder & level suits you better than sickle & scythe? Hands on Housing is rehabilitating over a dozen homes in East Austin. They seek Volunteers for this weekend, Sat-Sun, Oct 18-19 to help rewire, repaint, re-roof, and in some cases completely rescue homes on the brink of collapse. 472-7627.

Peacenik Picnic

The Returned Hill Country Peace Corps Volunteers Group will meet, Sun, Oct 19, 2pm at Riverbend Baptist Church, 4214 Capital of Texas Hwy N. That's all they wrote... 448-1830.
