The Lunatic, the Lover, & the Poet

Say, what abridgement have you for this evening?

What masque? What music? How shall we beguile

the lazy time, if not with some delight?

The riot of the tipsy Bacchanals, perhaps? Perhaps not for this night, but for Sun, Jul 20, 8pm? What more delightful than this Midsummer Night's International Cinema Sound Circus, Dollar Arcade Deluxxe & Bake Sale to be held at the Carousel Lounge. This Benefit for KOOP Radio 91.7FM will feature Super 8 films; music by Spot, comic artist Walt Holcombe (playing musical saw!), Star*Crunch, and Abrasion; puppets; hand-decorated undies (by Penny Van Horn, Roy Tompkins, and more) for sale; and all sorts of other things that we neither understand nor wish to get into here and now. We will probably go despite the fact that one of the unthinkables has to do with m-m-mimes. It's only $4. 472-1369.

Quite a Build Up

Casas for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is raising the walls. Six of the area's premier architects and homebuilders have tossed together a few "shacks" for your wonderment. Every year, CASA displays designer playhouses for a special Raffle fundraiser. This year the six glorious dream doll-sized houses will be at Highland Mall, Fri, Jul 25 - Sat, Aug 9. Bidding will determine the winners of the "European Castle," the "Holland Windmill," the "Swiss Chalet," "Fort Clark," the "Secret Garden Cottage" (wait... isn't there a book by that name...?), and "Swiss Family Robinson Goes L.A." which we picture as some sort of castaway Baywatch fantasy. Raffle tickets are $3 or 10 for $25. 459-2272.

Annie Oakley's Dream House

There's a restored log cabin in North Austin called the Wells Branch Homestead, also known as "Gault Cabin." Our interest is piqued; guess we're gonna have to mosey on up and check it out. A perfect opportunity might be next Thu, Jul 24, 7pm for Evenings on the Porch with Native American storyteller and musician Tim Tingle. The Homestead is located at 2106 Klattenhoff and donation is only $1. If you get there before we do, save us a stoop. 459-HOME.

Don't Write Off the Summer

The folks at the Austin Writers' League have booked an impressive array of writers to participate in their annual Kids Summer Writing Camp, Mon-Thu, Jul 28-31, 10am-2pm, at BookPeople. Writers like Mark Mitchell, Nancy Bell, Alan Altimont, Andrew Osborn, Frank Campbell, Shannon Wheeler, and Virginia Watkins will be on hand to pass along to kids all they know about poetry, drama, fiction, non-fiction, and writing for comics and the Internet. 499-8914.

Dog Nabbit!

Two different doggie doin's this weekend will help tone you and the pooch and benefit a few good canine causes. The Doggie Dash, Sat, Jul 19, is a series of runs (1K, 2K, 3K) for pets and their pals at the lovely Old Settler's Park in Round Rock. A $15 entry fee to run will benefit CASA, but the event is free to the public. As always, you can count on food, games, crafts, fun, etc. 342-0547.

After you and Daisy the Dachshund have raced your short legs silly, head on down to the greenbelt for a cooldown at the Hike for Humanity, Sun, Jul 20, 9am. There is a 7.5 mile competitive race and a treasure hunt. All this will benefit the Humane Society-SPCA of Austin & Travis County. http://www.austinspca.com or [email protected] or 837-7985.

Under the Volcano

Jennifer Harbury has a story to tell. Despite the surreal nature of the horror, it's a true story of love, suffering, and fortitude. Harbury's husband, a Mayan resistance leader known as Everardo, was captured, detained, tortured, and assassinated by the Guatemalan army in 1992. Our own U.S. government participated in the outrageous web of misinformation Harbury endured before learning of her husband's fate. Her diligent search is documented in her Time/Warner book Searching for Everardo: A Story of Love, War, and the CIA in Guatemala. Harbury will present a Booksigning & Update at BookPeople, Sat, Jul 19, 8pm. For more info, see "In Person" in the Books Section, this issue, page41. 447-6222. n
