Red Salmon Arts is bringing nationally syndicated Chicana/o journalists Patrisia Gonzales and Roberto Rodriguez to Resistencia Bookstore (1801-A S. First St.) on Friday, March 9, at 7pm. Gonzales is the author of the forthcoming The Mud People: Anonymous Heroes of Mexico; Rodriquez is the author of Justice: A Question of Race. They will be speaking on traditional folk healing and the Aztlanahuac Retrieval Project in celebration of International Women's Day. Call 416-8885 for more information… Jim Hightower's Beer Bust & Bush Bash will take place at BookPeople on Monday, March 12, at 7pm, in order to celebrate the completely revised and fully updated paperback version of If the Gods Had Meant Us to Vote, They Would Have Given Us Candidates… Writing on the Air, the radio show produced by the Writers' League of Texas Radio Collective wants submissions for its Audio Anthology of Short Shorts. Submit a work of original fiction, no more than 500 words in length, containing the following three words: "chandelier," "gospel," and "turquoise," in any order or context. UT Press Fellowship

UT Press offers two fellowships for people who want to work in publishing. Both fellowships, the UT Press Publishing Fellowship and the James A. Michener Publishing Fellowship, are intended for graduates of UT-Austin, and preference is given to applicants with advanced degrees or those who can demonstrate advanced study or work experience beyond a baccalaureate. Fellowships begin on September 1 and end August 31, 2002. They consist of intensive training in one department (editorial or design and production) but provide exposure to aspects of all other departments. The emphasis is on scholarly publishing, but much of the training applies to commercial publishing as well. $18,000 stipend. Film Contests

The Southwestern Writers Collection at SWT is joining the second annual Flea Market Film Festival by sponsoring a research paper contest as well as a screenwriting contest. SWT students who are working on film research on any topic can submit a paper of no more than 30 pages; for the screenwriting contest, students can submit a full-length feature film (95-125 pp.). For the screenplay, judging will be based on dialogue, story, plot, structure, and character. For the research paper, judging will be based on creativity, writing style, and the use of materials in the Southwestern Writers Collection. All submissions due on or before Monday, March 19. Both contests will be judged by SWT faculty members and Southwestern Writers Collection staff members. Cover sheet should include author's name, address, and phone number, title of screenplay, name of contest, and submission date.
