Upcoming literary events in Austin and ideas about entering nationwide writing contests.

Mixed Notes

Writing on the Air, the Austin Writers' League's radio show, will air its first radio play on Dec. 30 with Hangover, an adaptation of a short story by Austin writer Joe O'Connell. Writing on the Air, which airs in Austin and San Antonio, in the past has centered solely on writers discussing their careers. The show airs at 4pm in Austin on KOOP 91.7 FM and at 10am on KRTU, also 91.7 FM, in San Antonio. The Austin Writers' League is looking to have Writing on the Air syndicated nationwide, and has interest from a station in Washington D.C. Hangover is the story of a college student on New Year's Day dealing with the impending death of his estranged father. O'Connell is a fiction writer who teaches at St. Edward's University and ACC... Two writing contests to enter, one for poetry, one for prose: Smallmouth Press, a small electronic press that publishes Stephen Dixon, among others, is offering $1,000 and electronic publication as an e-book for the best novella submitted to its first annual Andre Dubus Novella Contest. On the press' Web site (www.smallmouth.com), the editors explain the impetus for the competition: "In such a loud and crass literary culture," they write, "Dubus's devotion to writing and the mastery of his craft demands recognition, remembrance. We feel privileged that the Dubus family has allowed us to pay tribute by naming our novella competition in his honor." Send double-spaced manuscripts, 75-150 pages. Your name should not appear anywhere on the manuscript. Include a cover sheet with your name, address, phone, e-mail, and manuscript title. One entry per person. All finalists will be considered for publication. Manuscripts must be postmarked before March 1, 2001. Send entries to: Andre Dubus Novella Award, Smallmouth Press, PO Box 661, New York, NY 10185. And Fence magazine is offering $1,000 and publication by Fencebooks in conjunction with saturnalia books to the author of the best collection by a poet writing in English at any stage in his or her career. The Fence Modern Poets Series 2001 is judged by "a poet of renown," according to www.fencemag.com. An entry form with an entry fee of $20 must accompany each submission. Multiple submissions are acceptable, but each manuscript must be entered under separate cover, with entry form and entry fee. Manuscript Requirements: between 48 and 60 pages, typed, paginated, bound with a removable clip and nothing more. Two cover pages: one with title of manuscript only, the other with title of manuscript, name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address. Deadline: Envelope must be postmarked by December 31. No Federal Express or UPS. Mail manuscript, entry form, and entry fee to Modern Poets Series, 168 Second Ave., PMB #224, New York, NY 10003... Applications for the 2001-2002 Dobie-Paisano Writing Fellowships are being accepted until January 26. The fellowship offers creative writers the opportunity to live and work at Paisano, J. Frank Dobie's 254-acre ranch 14 miles west of Austin. Applicants should either be a native of Texas, have lived in Texas at some time for at least two years, or have published writing that has a Texas subject. Criteria include quality of work, character of the proposed project, and suitability of the applicant for life at Paisano. The first fellowship begins September 1, 2001 and the second March 1, 2002. Each provides a living allowance of $2,000 monthly during residence. For more info, write: Dobie-Paisano Project, J. Frank Dobie House, 702 E. Dean Keeton St., Austin, TX 78705; call 471-8542; or e-mail [email protected]. To download an application, see www.utexas.edu/ogs/Paisano.

The last time we heard about Karla Faye Tucker, she was being executed; now, almost four years later, there's a new novel about her. Or about someone very like her. And Beverly Lowry's classic Crossed Over, a memoir about getting to know Karla Faye Tucker, gets a reissue.
