It's already been an uncommonly strong season for plays that play on political themes
(House Arrest,
Ham,
Zoot Suit,
Copyright Denied,
Omnium-Gatherum), and the hits just keep on comin'. Next up is
Dear George: Letters to the President, a theatrical presentation of actual letters from Americans across the country, collected by Marcus Woollen of New York's West 50th Street Productions since Memorial Day of this year. Vortex Repertory Company a group that's never been shy about putting politics on stage joins 27 other theatre companies from coast to coast in readings of this play before the November election. For the only reading in the president's home state, Producing Artistic Director Bonnie Cullum will employ the talents of Mick D'arcy, Karen Kuykendall, Traci Laird, and Marc Pouhé. The letters they'll read come from all 50 states, were penned by Americans of varied backgrounds and political viewpoints, and are evenly divided between those who approve and disapprove of the president. The reading will take place Monday, Oct. 18, 8pm, at the Vortex, 2307 Manor Rd. Everyone who arrives before 7:45pm will have an opportunity to write their own letters to Mr. Bush, with some of them being incorporated into the performance. All will be forwarded to the White House, just as all letters collected in this project have been. (Check them out at
