Dancing the Desert

March 19, 2004, Arts

Music isn't the only performing art to map our country. You can see an example of dance doing the same thing just a couple of days after ASO's American-flavored concert, when the exhilarating company MOMIX returns to town with their Opus Cactus. Conceived by Artistic Director Moses Pendleton, the full-evening work creates a portrait of the American Southwest. In 19 sequences, dancers portray desert flowers in bloom and bugs and beasts slithering across the sands and baked ground. Colorful and ingenious costumes, props ranging from fans to skateboards, and the athleticism and acrobatics of the company members bring the desert indoors.

MOMIX performs Opus Cactus Monday, March 22, 8pm at the Paramount Theatre, 713 Congress. For information, visit www.theparamount.org.
