B. Iden Payne Award Nominations, 1999-2000

The Music Man
The Music Man

On Monday, August 14, the Austin Circle of Theatres released its nominations for the 1999-2000 B. Iden Payne Awards, the annual theatre honors named for Shakespearean scholar and director B. Iden Payne, who spent his later years in Austin at the University of Texas. This year, 59 productions by 30 different companies were honored with nominations, the most favored shows being the Austin Musical Theatre production of The Music Man (10 nominations) and the VORTEX Repertory Company production of Despair's Book of Dreams and the Sometimes Radio (eight nominations). It was a good year for designer Michael Raiford, who received four nominations, and for Peyton Hayslip, Lana Lesley, Sarah Richardson, Kirk Smith, Scott Thompson, and Joe York, all of whom received three nominations each. In fact, it was a good year for multiple nominees in general; almost one-fourth of all the individuals on this year's list received more than one nomination.

This year's list reflects a few changes made by the 15-member Awards Nominations Committee. After several years in which nonmusical productions were grouped together under the heading Plays, the committee has returned to a system in which nonmusicals are divided into Dramas and Comedies. This year, the committee considered lead and featured performances together in all but one category, Dramas, but it also created a new category: Outstanding Cast Performance, citing the ensemble work in the productions of Abundance, Bleacher Bums, The Cry Pitch Carrolls, Love's Fire, and Shakespeare's R&J.

Ballots containing the nominations are mailed to Austin Circle of Theatres members, who vote for the winners. The ballots will be tabulated and the awards presented at a ceremony to be held Monday, September 18, 7pm, at the Scottish Rite Theatre. Call 454-9700 for information.
