The friends and colleagues of Austin theatre artist T.J. Gaudette will plant a tree in his memory on the grounds of Planet Theatre next Thursday, October 31. The day is the first anniversary of the death of Gaudette, a member of the Austin Circle of Theatres and the VORTEX Repertory Company who is perhaps best remembered for the scenic designs he created for the VORTEX productions Steel Kiss, Wisdom of the Crone, and Free Will and Wanton Lust. Get to the Austin Music Hall pronto! Capitol City Casa de Juego, the big concert fundraiser for Capitol City Playhouse, is happening there tonight, Thursday, October 24, at 7:30pm. Ruben Ramos & the Texas Revolution, Joe "King" Carrasco, Los Pinkys, Los Jazz Vatos, and the Matt Powell Band will play to benefit the theatre, which must vacate its longtime home this December. ProArts Collective is putting its best big foot forward with a distinctive benefit: the "Big Foot" Shoe Sale, featuring regular shoes for women and men, plus specialty and "celebrity" shoes for sale. Lyons Matrix Gallery invites you to The Bob and Bert Show, a happy hour event with artists Bob Wade and Bert Long, whose artwork is on display in the gallery's current exhibition, Native Texans, showing through November 9. The Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center continues its look back in wonder at the last 40 years of British theatre, Shouting in the Evening. Along with a major exhibition of artifacts in the Leeds Gallery (fourth floor, Flawn Academic Center), the HRHRC has been sponsoring a series of free programs on the period's major playwrights. It concludes next Wednesday, October 30, with the lecture Playwright as Screenwriter, focusing on David Hare, Harold Pinter, and Tom Stoppard. David Cohen, head of Playwriting in the UT Department of Theatre & Dance and critic for The Texas Triangle, gives the talk. It begins at 7pm, in the Leeds Gallery. For info, call 471-8944.
