Duran Poster Signings

Now, you can have a little of the Parque Zaragosa Recreation Center for your very own. The East Austin Rotary Club has taken some of the artwork that muralist Fidencio Durán is using to adorn the Gonzales Street rec center and reproduced it as a poster, which the club is selling to help supplement the travel grant awarded to Durán by the Dallas Museum of Art. Durán was chosen by the Art in Public Places program to paint three murals depicting neighborhood historical events at Parque Zaragosa. The Rotarians made a poster from his Diez y Seis mural, and they want you not only to buy it, but to get it signed by the artist. They've lined up four signings over the next two weeks: Tuesday, September 3, 5-9pm, at the Austin Museum of Art, 823 Congress; Thursday, September 5, 11am-2pm, and Friday, September 6, early evening, at Central Market, 4001 N. Lamar; and Sunday, September 8, 11am-2pm, at El Sol y la Luna, 1224 S. Congress. Call 928-8780 for info.

Honors

Michael Stewart placed among the top 12 finalists in the Artistry in Metal competition sponsored by Eutectic Corporation. The UT Austin studio art student was recognized for his piece Fraternity, a welded steel sculpture featuring winding metal rods entwined between and joined to two larger, curved metal pieces. The piece was chosen from among more than 220 entries from all across North America. It will be featured in a 1997 wall calendar published by Eutectic.

The Starlight Theatre Company of James Bowie High School has been chosen to take part in the 1997 American High School Theatre Festival, a segment of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, to be held in August of next year in Scotland. Bowie was picked from among 190 high school theatre departments and was the first from Texas to be asked to take part. The school plans to send 30 company members on the two-week intercontinental trip, so they'll be hosting a few fundraisers this year. Their first is this weekend: a three-show run of the musical comedy Nunsense. (An apt choice, since the play itself is a talent-show fundraiser.) The performances are August 30-September 1, Friday and Saturday, 7:30pm, Sunday, 2pm, at Bowie High, 4103 W. Slaughter Lane. Tickets are $6. Call 414-2343 for info.

Worthy Causes

Artists Legal & Accounting Assistance really wanted to have a garage sale last week, but the weather didn't cooperate. So, those helpful professionals who provide an estimated $300,000 in pro bono legal and accounting services every year are going to try it again this weekend, on August 31. The date may be different, but everything else is as before -- same day of the week (Saturday), same hours (8am-noon), same location (4209 Avenue A). And, as always, proceeds benefit ALAA.
