Featuring a small group of musicians and local bands under different names and guises who are somehow related to the local Business Deal Records, the Top 40 features a great idea behind its format: the songs are counted off like a Top 40 radio show, Casey Kasem style, complete with jingles. The ubiquitous Gene Defcon, bass player in the Old-Timerz, makes solo appearances, as does the Zom Zoms' Pat, who also plays in the Telephone Company with Chef Pittman who's also a member of the Pinecones with Jennifer Moore, who … you get the idea. And that six-degrees mentality keeps this collection tight and weird as hell. There's Defcon's swirly "Toss That Fish Back" and the equally warped "Mushroom Cloud." There's La Junta High School, a trio that pulls off Miami bass rap-offs about NBA players from the '90-'91 season. There's the adorable elementary-pop of the Telephone Company, the Old-Timerz with "Date With Myself," a jerkin' song about flogging the dolphin, and delicious tunes from Teenage Dog, Fart Face, Zom Zoms, Video Screams, Cavedweller, and the always amusing Count Dracula's Weed Smuggling Jam Engine. This is, like, totally the party rock mixtape of the summer!
